Questions to ask a potential wedding photographer.

1) First of all, I am hoping that before you contact a wedding photographer that you have already done your research on their work. If a photographer is only displaying 10 wedding photographs on their website, and they don’t have a social media followering or social media albums or a blog where they’re blogging a significant ammount of photos from each wedding to show of their style, I would probably ask why are you drawn to them in the first place?
If you find a photographer whose work you love, you can feel free to ask them

‘How many weddings have you photographed or filmed?’

However hopefully you can see from the work they’re displaying, that the answer is a lot.

2) Another valid question that brides have asked me over the years is

“How do I know that you really took these photographs?”

Some of you may read that and gasp, and think “what? Why would any bride ask that?” Well let me tell you that there are some deceptive people who get into the wedding industry, and steal the photographs and video footage of professional wedding photographers and try to present it as their own. This doesn’t just happen with wedding photographers, but also makeup artists, and other wedding pros.
I have been in the wedding industry since 2007, however in 2012 I began getting a photograph of me with each of my brides, as a way of easily showing brides ‘hey look! I look friendly and my brides look happy to be standing next to me!’ Since then, no bride has ever asked me this question. You can see photos of me with my brides on my website in the about me section,
I also have video reviews from brides inside of my ‘Real Brides’ videos where brides talk about their wedding planning process and how they day went. You can find them here (there are about 90 more to be uploaded but I’ve had a busy schedule)

3)

“Where can I see a lot of your work?”

I actually display between 100 and 200 images from each wedding on my blog to give people a clear understanding that I do a mix of the crazy, the fun, and the classic and beautiful.
I do this so that I can help future brides see the story that I’m telling with my camera, but also sot hat I can demonstrate a consistency between weddings.
They should be able to show you a consistent body of work, across a combination of natural light, indoor, outdoor, artificial light, controlled light, poorly lit venues etc.
It doesn’t matter if your photographer hasn’t been to your venue before, but have they taken photos in similar lighting situations?
