Hi everyone, well it’s been long overdue but with the upcoming launch of my business in San Diego California I thought it was time I sat down to write out a little bit of the story as to why I’m moving my business from Australia to the US.
I have had the pleasure of taking photographs in Australia, The USA, Canada, Ghana, Honduras, Japan, and New Zealand.. International flights to and from Australia can often be in excess of 30 hours with layovers, and finally I moved to the US.
After Christmas, I had to return to Australia as I had 15 weddings in 4 months between January and May. I was really naughty and ended up postponing my flights for a week, when I caught wind that the Backstreet Boys were going to be playing in Perth. so I postponed and I picked up a last minute wedding AND met the Backstreet Boys for the 2nd time (the first time was in Phoenix AZ 2011) so it was all worth it!
Over the last 12 months I had constant comments from people saying “Just cancel on the brides, and just tell them you can’t do their wedding anymore.” But there is no way that I would ever operate a business that way, or treat people who have trusted me (for the most part 2 years in advance) with their wedding plans and their special day. The brides whose weddings I have been shooting now, primarily all booked me from bridal expos and referrals almost 2 years ago. When I filmed the “Real Brides” reality show videos with each of my engaged couples, one thing they all say is “I picked Sky as my wedding photographer because her work is so unique and fun, and she really cares about what we want”. There is no way I could just ditch my gorgeous brides and grooms like that!
I got to spend time in the USA throughout the middle of May, until the middle of September, but then I had to fly back to Australia in time for my first wedding back in Australia for the 2015/2016 summer which was Belinda + Kim’s wedding.
I pulled all of my advertising in September 2014 and had to put signs and posters all over my website and facebook page saying “Sky is booked out for 2015” and considering that I pulled my advertising I have had an amazing year full of fun weddings and fun brides and grooms whom for the most part had me locked in for their weddings for 2 years leading up to it.
Now it’s time for me to start advertising in California, as I will be shooting weddings in California, and Las Vegas, as well as New York. I will be officially launching my business in January in California and am really excited about the upcoming weddings I am shooting in 2016.
Due to me being all over the globe with weddings and flight schedules, my gorgeous kitty cats Teddy and Tashee had to fly to California which was going to be my new home. (Before I moved to Atlanta to be an Atlanta Wedding Photographer). The little furry friends had better flights than I did as well! They flew QANTAS Airlines! Who I must say did an amazing job looking after them, although I think I have jetpets to thank for that. The United States does not have any sort of quarantine for animals, since they’re exposed to all diseases. It’s very much the opposite in Australia where rabies does not exist, and nor do a pile of other contagions, so we have the tightest quarantines in the world!
My darling Teddy is a hyperthyroid cat, which means he has to have medication morning and night. Lena has been doing an amazing job looking after the kitty cats without me, while I’ve been back in Australia.
I have been back in Australia since September 29th, with 7 weddings to photograph in 9 weeks. The last of the 7 weddings I’m photographing in this trip will be Sam + Dave who I shot engagement photographs + video for last week, and their wedding is coming up in a couple of weeks time.
It has been an absolutely crazy almost 7 weeks so far, with 4 weddings done, 3 to go, but also about 20 family, couples, and baby shoots in this time!
I’m really excited about all the weddings + photo-shoots that I have lined up, and I’m really looking forward to launching business as an Atlanta Wedding Photographer.
